YOUR COMPLETE TAX YEAR

Begin with the year and everything that changed.

A personal tax review should consider the whole year, not only the certificate from your current employer. Changing jobs, starting freelance work, renting out a property or receiving investment income may add information that needs attention. Tell us about these changes before a return is prepared so the relevant questions are asked early.

The ITR12 is the individual income tax return. Whether you must submit and how an auto-assessment should be handled depends on your actual circumstances and the current SARS requirements. An old salary figure quoted on a website is not a reliable stand-alone test for every individual.

  • Start with the year of assessment, any SARS notice already received and a short list of income sources.
  • Distinguish a new return from a correction, an auto-assessment review or a response to a document request. These are related but different tasks. A clear starting point helps the team scope the work and avoids submitting another return before understanding the existing record.
YOUR SITUATION

Is your year employment-only, more complex or already assessed?

Employment income and routine certificates

Gather the complete year, including any earlier employer.

  • Check employment, investment, medical and retirement information against the documents issued.
  • A refund shown on a notice does not remove the need to review the facts.

Rental, freelance or foreign income

Explain each income source and the period it relates to.

  • Prepare supported income-and-expense schedules and identify mixed personal spending.
  • Foreign work, residence changes, asset disposals and lump sums should be flagged for an appropriate scope.

Auto-assessment or earlier return needs review

Start with the actual SARS notice and what you believe is missing or incorrect.

  • Keep any third-party certificate that appears wrong and the relevant correspondence.
  • A revised return, supporting-document response and formal dispute are different tasks.

EVIDENCE BEFORE CLAIMS

Organise evidence by income and claim.

Compare the documents with your own understanding of the year rather than assuming that every prefilled item is complete and correct.

We use the information to identify the relevant work, not to promise that every expense will reduce tax. A claim should be supported by the facts and applicable rules before it appears in the return.

  • Every relevant employer in the yearIRP5 or IT3(a) employment certificates

Keep employment certificates together, including records from earlier employers in the same year.

  • Income or claim appliesInvestment, medical, retirement and donation records

Add the relevant investment, medical scheme, retirement and donation information where applicable.

  • Non-employment activityFreelance or rental income-and-expense schedules

For freelance or rental activity, prepare an income-and-expense schedule supported by the underlying records.

  • Mixed-use expensesReceipts explaining personal or mixed spending

Separate personal spending and explain amounts that cover more than one purpose.

  • Deduction or credit being consideredSupporting evidence for conditional claims

Where a claim depends on particular conditions or evidence, provide that material rather than only a total entered in a spreadsheet.

  • Unusual transactions or changesDisposal, foreign-work and lump-sum documents

Make a separate note of unusual transactions or changed circumstances, such as a property sale, foreign work or a lump-sum payment. These may require additional review beyond a basic employment-only return.

  • Auto-assessment or existing caseSARS assessment notice and document request

Keep the full notice and the actual response requirement so a review starts from the current assessment stage.

AUTOMATIC DOES NOT MEAN UNCHECKED

Check an auto-assessment against your records.

Review of the auto-assessment

An auto-assessment is based on information available to SARS.

  • It should be reviewed against your circumstances rather than ignored because it arrived automatically or accepted solely because it shows a refund.
  • Compare the relevant income and deduction information and identify what, if anything, needs attention.

Incorrect third-party information

If a third-party certificate appears incorrect, retain the original and explain the discrepancy.

  • The appropriate correction may involve the employer or institution that supplied the information.
  • Adding an unexplained manual adjustment without addressing the source can leave the underlying inconsistency unresolved.

A correction or formal disagreement

Keep the SARS notice and identify the relevant response requirements for the current filing season.

  • Where you disagree, the correct route depends on the nature and stage of the matter. We distinguish checking the available information from preparing a revised return or a formal dispute.
  • The scope should identify what the team will do and what supporting evidence you need to provide, rather than present every disagreement as a simple click to obtain a different result.
FROM RETURN TO OUTCOME

Review the facts, submit with authority, understand the outcome.

  1. 01

Agree the year, records and scope

We first confirm the year, task and records available, then identify missing information and any matters outside a straightforward return.

    • Agree the fee and whether additional schedules or follow-up are included. If earlier years are outstanding, list them separately so the preparation sequence is clear.
  2. 02

    Prepare and review the information

The return is prepared using the relevant information and authorised access.

    • You should review important facts and the basis of material claims before submission.
    • Keep your login credentials private and use the proper authorisation process for assistance. A request for help does not give an unknown person unrestricted access to your tax affairs.
  3. 03

    Read the assessment and requests

After submission, review the assessment and any request for supporting documents.

    • A refund, amount payable or further verification are different outcomes and should be explained accurately.
  4. 04

Keep the record and identify next actions

Keep the return, calculation and correspondence together.

    • If a payment is due, identify the responsible action; if a refund is expected, do not treat a calculation alone as proof that money has been paid into your account.
NO REFUND PROMISES

Choose support that fits the complexity of the year.

An employment-only return can involve different work from a year containing rental activity, self-employment or foreign income. Describe the situation honestly when asking for a quote. The useful measure of scope is the information and issues involved, not a promise that everyone will receive the same refund.

Use the completed review to improve next year’s records. Keep receipts and schedules organised during the year, update relevant personal details and retain correspondence where you can find it. If non-employment income is recurring, ask whether provisional tax needs attention separately. A good handover should leave you understanding what was submitted and what you still need to do.

  • The engagement should identify whether it covers the initial preparation, review of an auto-assessment, supporting-document assistance or a specific correction. Formal disputes and extensive historical work may require a separate assessment.
  • Professional fees are separate from any tax due to SARS. Whether an assessment results in a refund depends on your tax position and the outcome of any relevant verification.

YOUR QUESTIONS. A CLEARER NEXT STEP.

Personal income tax returns:
frequently asked questions.

01Will you guarantee a refund?

No. The result depends on the income, allowable claims, payments and applicable rules for your circumstances. The purpose of the service is an accurate, supported return or review. A refund shown in a preliminary calculation is also different from a verified payment received in your bank account.

02Do I need help if SARS has already auto-assessed me?

You may need a review if you are unsure whether the information reflects your year. Compare the assessment with your records and identify missing or incorrect details. The next action depends on the issue and current SARS process, rather than automatically filing another return.

03Can I claim every cost connected to working from home?

Do not assume that. The treatment depends on the applicable conditions and evidence. Tell the team about the arrangement and provide the relevant records so the potential claim can be assessed. An expense appearing on a bank statement does not by itself establish a deduction.

04What if I had more than one employer or a side business?

Provide information for every relevant income source in the year, including earlier employers and the side activity. A return prepared from only the most recent employment certificate may not reflect the full picture. Separate business records should explain income, expenses and any shared personal costs.

05Can you deal with a document request after I filed myself?

We can review the request and the return already submitted, then agree a defined response scope. Keep the actual SARS notice and source evidence. The response should address what was asked rather than send a large unstructured bundle or alter records to match an unsupported claim.

06What should I tell you when requesting a quote?

State the year, income sources, whether SARS has issued an assessment and any outstanding correspondence. Mention rental, business, investment or foreign activity early. That lets the team explain the preparation needed and whether the request goes beyond a basic personal return.
